Bergen Free Walking Tours: Dive into Ancient Scandinavian Heritage
Bergen is one of the largest cities in Norway and has every right to be called a tourist center or a starting point for various tourist trips. It is like a gateway to the world of fjords where attractive tourist spots are also located, and professional guides who conduct Bergen walking tours will help you explore them.
Bergen Tourist Spots to See
The city is full of interesting places to explore during a free walking tour in Bergen. Below we would like to draw your attention to the most popular tourist places in this region.
Bryggen District
This district consists of small wooden houses painted yellow, green, and red, lined up on the eastern shore of Vågen Bay – this landscape opens up a view of the city. Bryggen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and those houses were once important warehouses for grain, as well as fish caught in the north.
Hanseatic Museum and Sjøtstuene
The graceful wooden building that houses the Hanseatic Museum was built after a fire in the early 18th century and is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Bergen. Since 1872, it has housed a museum documenting the 400-year history of the German merchant guild’s association with Bergen (from about 1350 to 1750). The entrance fee is about 13 euros.
St. Mary's Church
The oldest building in all of Bergen is located near the Bryggen area and is a very unusual example of Romanesque architecture on Norwegian soil. St. Mary's Church was built in the mid-12th century. What makes the church special is that no other church in all of Norway has a similar western façade with seemingly banal square towers and semicircular windows typical of the Romanesque style. The entrance fee is about 8 euros.
Bergenhus Fortress
Since the mid-13th century, this fortress has guarded the entrance to Vågen Bay. The current appearance of the fortress owes much to 19th-century culture, but there are also structures dating back to the period between the 13th and 20th centuries (for example, German bunkers from World War II). One of the oldest rooms in the fortress is the elegant Haakon Hall.
Damsgård Estate
In Damsgårdsundt is an estate that can rightfully be considered the best wooden Rococo mansion in the world. Damsgård Estate was built in the 1770s for the Minister of War Joachim Christian Helmuyden Gyldenkrantz at a time when aristocrats began to settle on the outskirts of the city. In the summer, the area is completely open to visitors, and an entrance fee will cost approximately 13.5 euros.
