Overview

From the 18th century until the mid-20th century, the Pest side could boost with one of the most flourishing Jewish communities in the region. We will trace what remains of it and have a glimpse of its history through the monuments of the district, also commemorating the tragedy that almost put an end to it. We will also see how the community lives nowadays.

Length: approximately 2-2.5 hours.

“Excellent tour”
We had a great tour with Daniel for several reasons. We were a party of 4, and no one else! Daniel gave us undivided attention and took us to spots that the larger tours did not. Because we were a small group, we got to see hidden gems that will probably disappear in a few years. Daniel gave us a deeper, richer experience into the life and times of the Jewish people before and during WWII - the only standing apartments from the original Jewish Ghetto, the memorial wall where the original once stood, remnants of advertising signage from a Jewish shop, and glimpses of behind the scenes of the synagogues. Because the synagogues were closed for us, Daniel had prepared amazing pictures of their interior- before and after the war. Daniel is well versed in the history of this time and it shows in his passion and knowledge!

“Jewish heritage tour”
Daniel had a lot of knowledge but the tour lacked order and transitions from one place to the next. It felt messy and was lacking a storyline.

“You NEED to go on this tour! ”
We cannot recommend Daniel’s tour enough! We met Daniel on Sunday after doing other walking tours in Budapest, and by far Daniel’s was the best. His level of knowledge is amazing, and his interest and passion in keeping the history of the Jewish community in Europe alive shines through. An absolute mensch, he answered our (many) questions and taught us so much. We had such a wonderful and meaningful time seeing Budapest through Daniel’s eyes, and learnt so much about the roots of the Jewish Hungarian communities. We will never forget Daniel’s tour and all that he taught us, as well as the lovely atmosphere he created; especially the interest Daniel took in our own family histories to build a rapport between us all. We have already recommended Daniel to our friends and family who plan on visiting Budapest and recommend wholeheartedly to anyone visiting to take his tour! Thank you so much Daniel!

“Informative, comprehensive tour of Budapest Jewish quarter”
Daniel is probably the most authoritative guide of his kind -- very intelligent, well-informed and self-aware. His insights into the history, present, and future of Jewish quarter in Budapest is eye-opening. Easily, one of the best tours we've had in Budapest -- a must do for someone interested in Jewish history!
