Exploring Bo-Kaap's Culture and History
Overview of the tour in Cape Town
Welcome to Cape Town!
A trip to Cape Town wouldn't be complete without exploring the vibrant Bo-Kaap (pronounced "boo-uh Kaap"). Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, this historic neighborhood dates back to the early days of Dutch colonization, when enslaved individuals from Indonesia and Africa were brought to the Cape.
During our visit, we’ll explore South Africa’s oldest mosque and learn about its founder, Tuan Guru. While Bo-Kaap’s brightly painted houses are a favorite for Instagram enthusiasts, their vibrant colors also tell a deeper story about the area’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Today, Bo-Kaap remains a predominantly Muslim neighborhood, with 70-75% of its residents practicing Islam. Visitors can savor the unique flavors and aromas of Cape Malay cuisine, which reflects the fusion of cultures that shaped this remarkable community.
