Immerse Yourself in the History of Ancient Catania with Free Walking Tours

The modern Catania we know today is the result of its last reconstruction in 1693. The cause of the last destruction was a powerful earthquake. The events took place during the heyday of the Baroque, a style in which almost all the palaces and churches of the city were recreated. They have survived to this day. If you are looking for an ideal place to relax, then Catania walking tours will help you to brighten up your time.

Spots You Must Visit in Catania

Arriving in Catania, every traveler will be able to enjoy the creations of architectural art and get acquainted with the local color. The city has managed to preserve much of this rich heritage so that today everyone has the opportunity to admire its amazing buildings with a free walking tour in Catania.

- Via Etnea Street. One of the most important and picturesque streets of Catania starts from Piazza del Duomo. Its name corresponds to the direction of the volcano Etna, which we can see during the entire three-kilometer walk along the street. This pedestrian area is full of shops and is a favorite place for tourists coming to Catania.

- Cathedral of Saint Agatha. The majestic temple on Cathedral Square was built in 1711 in honor of the patron saint Agatha. The façade of the white-stone Baroque cathedral is decorated with granite columns, marble slabs, and numerous statues. The relics of Saint Agatha are kept on its territory, as well as the burial places of several Sicilian kings and the composer Vincenzo Bellini.

- Ursino Castle. One of the most gloomy and majestic medieval castles in Sicily. It was built in the 13th century on a coastal cliff. It is still in remarkable condition - all four of its towers and walls are intact and have no visible damage. In addition, near the castle, you will find the remains of the old outer walls. The entrance fee is 6 euros.

- San Nicolo L'Arena. In 1702, the Benedictines decided to build the Church of San Nicolo on the site of the Greek Acropolis. Work on the building continued until the end of the 18th century and was never completed. The unfinished state gives the façade a strange, almost hostile appearance. A pair of massive columns on raised plinths end abruptly, and the pins that are supposed to hold the opposing stones stick out of the concrete like bristles. The ticket will cost you 10 euros.

- Via dei Crociferi. The street starts with the Arch of San Benedetto, which connects the church of the same name with the Benedictine monastery. This church has a stunning marble staircase with statues of angels. Further on is the Church of San Francesco Borgia and the Jesuit College with a beautiful internal cloister, complete with arches and columns. In front of the college is the Church of San Giuliano, considered one of the most interesting examples of Sicilian Baroque.
