Overview

We are in front of the church of San Nicolò, from where we start a walk in which the protagonist will be the Etna volcano.

First, we will enter the courtyard of the Benedictine monastery of Catania. This historic place was one of the first to be damaged by the eruption of 1669, which left important traces that can still be seen today, such as huge blocks of lava several meters high.

We will continue our tour descending towards the Roman Theater while I tell you the story of the Amenano River. This river, nowadays, is largely subway.

From this point we will head towards the Ursino Castle, a fortress that was almost completely surrounded by the eruption. There we will discover how this impressive natural phenomenon left its mark on the architecture of the city.

If you take the tour in the morning, we will arrive at the hostel A putia dell'Ostello, where we will show you a hidden gem inside its small bar. In case you take the tour in the afternoon, I will take you to the Gammazita Well, linked to the eruption of 1669 and with an interesting legend that we will tell you during the activity.

On arrival

At the appointed time we will meet in front of the church of San Nicolò, which is in Piazza Dante. I'll be in front of the church, where the stairs are. It's easy to recognize me: I have blond hair and blue eyes, I look like a German, but I'm Italian!

Things to note

There is no internal visit to each monument, but only from the outside.

“Highly recommended tour!”
Mirko was excellent. We have seen the traces left in the city by the eruption of Etna in 1669, while we have discovered beautiful corners of Catania that we had not reached, despite having previously walked the city. A highly recommended tour.
