Hiking to Machu Picchu is the best way to explore this iconic Inca site nestled on the top of the mountains, and the best way is to hike on the Inca Trail, which crosses the Andes and ends in the cloud forest where Machu Picchu is.
4-Day Inca Trail Itinerary:
Day 1. Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Km. 82, Wayllabamba
The adventure starts in Cusco at 5:00 am with the pick-up from your hotel, a drive to km 82 to pass the checkpoint, and a hike of around 6 hours on an easy path with some visits to different Inca sites.
Day 2: Wayllabamba: Dead women pass; Pacaymayu:
This is a tough day on the Inca Trail, as we have to reach 4,215 meters on an ascending trail with many stairs.
Day 3. Pacaymayu, Runkurakay Pass, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñaywayna:
The longest day on this trek but also the most incredible day; today, we'll visit some Inca complexes and descend to the cloud forest area with breathtaking views.
Day 4. Wiñaywayna, Sun Gate, Machu Picchu, and Cusco:
Finally, the most important day comes. Today, we'll visit Machu Picchu. We hiked for 2 hours to get there, and the first view will be from the Sun Gate.
In the afternoon, we'll return to Cusco.

This trek is very physically demanding, so we recommend spending a few days in Cusco to acclimatize to the altitude.
