Kliptown Informal Settlement Walking Tour
Overview of the tour in Johannesburg
Our journey commences with a captivating exploration of the Kliptown community, renowned as the birthplace of the historic Freedom Charter drafted in 1955. During the Congress of the People gathering held in this informal settlement, a pivotal document was conceived, aiming to dismantle the oppressive system imposed by the Apartheid government.
Our tour unfolds at the Kliptown Market, a significant establishment created during the Apartheid era to serve the predominantly black population who were often denied the privilege of owning a permit. Subsequently, we venture into the informal settlement, fostering connections with the locals while indulging in authentic regional cuisine and savoring the unique taste of Umqombothi, our African beer.
As we explore further, we immerse ourselves in the community spirit, visiting one of the tin houses to provide our guests with an authentic experience. Here, locals will share their vibrant culture through song and dance, offering an engaging and entertaining glimpse into their way of life.
