Overview of the tour in Kandy
Itinerary with key things to do:
1. Leave Kandy Early Morning
Depart around 6:00 AM to make the most of your day. It’s roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive to Sigiriya (about 90 km).
2. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple)
Stop at Dambulla on the way to Sigiriya (around 2 hours from Kandy). This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a series of cave temples with impressive Buddha statues and vibrant wall paintings.
Duration: 1.5 hours
3. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress Highlights:
Sigiriya’s frescoes (ancient paintings) on the rock.
The Mirror Wall and Lion’s Gate.
Top of the rock for panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and ruins.
Duration: 2-3 hours for the full climb and exploration.
5. Optional: Pidurangala Rock
If you have time and energy after Sigiriya, you can visit Pidurangala Rock, which is located nearby. It’s a popular alternative climb with equally stunning views of Sigiriya Rock itself.
6. Visit a Spice Garden
On your way back to Kandy, stop at a spice garden near Matale.
7. Return to Kandy
Head back to Kandy in the evening. You should be back by 6:00 or 7:00 PM.
