Experience the Beauty of Lübeck in Detail
Lübeck is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction — people come here to see the medieval city, where the architecture of the Renaissance, Gothic, and Classicism has been preserved. Let's find out which picturesque places you should visit first.
St. Mary's Church
The Marienkirche is impressive in its size. The height of the vault of the central nave of the church is 38.5 m. This is the highest brick vault in the world. The building is so majestic that it served as a prototype for the construction of 70 other European churches in the Gothic style. Marienkirche is currently the third-largest German church in size, and at the time of its construction, it was the largest. The entrance ticket costs 4 euros.
Holstein Gate
The Holstein Gate is a symbol of the Hanseatic League. It is made in the style of brick Gothic. The Holstein Gate was part of the Hanseatic League fortifications. Until 1864, the gate complex had a cascade of four defensive structures. The gates served to protect the city from a possible attack by the Kingdom of Denmark and the Dukes of Holstein. You can visit this place for 8 euros.
Lübeck Cathedral
Lübeck Cathedral is one of the first large buildings built in the Brick Gothic style in the Baltic region. The length of the cathedral is a record for red brick churches - 130 meters. The construction of the cathedral was ordered by the founder of the city, Heinrich the Lion. The temple appeared in the 13th century in the Romanesque style. A few years later, it was rebuilt into a Gothic hall church. The border between the two parts of the cathedral is visible to the naked eye: the first part of the building rests on rectangular supports, and the second is on round Gothic columns.
Hospital of the Holy Spirit
Lübeck is also home to one of the oldest operating social institutions in the world - the Hospital of the Holy Spirit (Heilig-Geist-Hospital), built with funds from merchants in 1268. This Hanseatic hospital was a hospital and a hostel for the poor. It is one of the most important architectural monuments of Lübeck. A nursing home still operates here.
Artist's Corner
At the beginning of the 20th century, this view of the Old Town became a classic motif for local and visiting photographers, after which the lawn from which it opened was named the Artist's Corner (Malerwinkel). The first postcard with this view was issued in 1935.
