Overview

Step into the untold history of Madrid and discover the deep, enduring legacy of Black communities in Spain. "Roots & Resistance" is an eye-opening journey through the hidden narratives of African heritage, resilience, and cultural contributions that have shaped the city for centuries.

From the powerful presence of the Moors, whose rule for over 700 years left an indelible mark on Spain’s architecture, language, and knowledge systems, to the often-overlooked stories of enslaved Africans who lived, labored, and resisted in Madrid—this tour sheds light on a past that history books often omit.

We will explore the city's colonial connections, tracing how Spain’s empire thrived on the exploitation of African labor in the Americas and how the wealth generated from slavery influenced Madrid’s rise as a global power. Along the way, we will uncover the presence of Black figures—both enslaved and free- who played crucial roles in Spanish society, from royal courts to artistic movements. Join us for an immersive, thought-provoking experience that will challenge perspectives and leave you with a deeper understanding of Madrid’s Black heritage.

“This tour is a MUST for all visitors to Madrid”
Informed, thoughtful and interesting, Kwame Ondo was an outstanding guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and shared information that is right before us though hidden in common knowledge and sources. Kwame provided information about history, architecture, art, politics, economics, the social context and more. This is a do-not-miss experience.

“GREAT HISTORICAL TOUR!”
Thank you Kwame for a opening our eyes to the other side of Spain! I knew there was a different perspective. Having visited sites in Barcelona and Sevilla, my mission was to get some of the real history of Spain during the early centuries. When I visited Granada and the Alhambra, our tour guide briefly mentioned that a painting located on one of the ceilings was done to show the figures with blond hair and blue eyes! What? When I asked questions about it, her answer was brief (almost no answer). Your tour has awakened my senses to study more about the Muslim/Black history of this country! I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to know the real Spain! Addison

“Solid tour. Great guide ”
I would prefer to hear more black history as it felt more like a tour with a side of black history rather than black history being the main topic throughout. I say this because I’ve done other tours in Madrid and this definitely felt similar. It felt like 70/30 “regular Madrid tour” / black history. Despite that the tour guide was quite knowledgeable and knew things other tour guides never mentioned about the city. He was patient, allowing time for questions and photos. And generally a kind guy.
