Overview
Madurai is often referred to as the "lotus-shaped" city, a description found in a Tamil publication. Since ancient times, it has been a city known for its thoughtful urban planning, with its roads and buildings laid out meticulously. At the heart of the city's design is the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the largest temples in India, serving as the central point from which all the roads radiate.
The Meenakshi Temple is a hub of constant activity, with ceremonies, musicians, weddings, and pilgrims always filling its grounds. It’s a vibrant space where one can truly experience the essence of temple life. As both the geographical and spiritual heart of Madurai, the temple is organized into a series of concentric enclosures, each surrounded by tall stone walls. Uniquely, it has four grand entrances, one in each cardinal direction, and features four towering gopurams (gateway towers), each adorned with thousands of colorful, intricately carved figures. Additionally, there are eight smaller towers and a magnificent hall containing a thousand elaborately decorated pillars.
