Things to note

1. Safety: Like in any big city, it’s important to be aware of your belongings and avoid displaying valuable items in busy areas. Stick to well-lit and busy areas, especially at night.
2. Transportation: Maputo offers various transportation options, including taxis, chapas (public transport minivans), and buses. Taxis are the safest and most comfortable option for tourists. Make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in or using metered taxis.
3. Language: Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique. However, many people in Maputo speak English, especially in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.
4. Money: The local currency is the Mozambican metical (MZN). It’s advisable to carry enough cash, as not all places accept credit cards. There are ATMs in the city, but it’s prudent to withdraw money in safe areas, such as shopping malls and banks.
5. Health: Check the necessary vaccinations before traveling, such as yellow fever and tetanus. It’s recommended to drink bottled water and avoid ice in drinks to prevent waterborne diseases.
6. Climate: Maputo has a tropical climate, with hot and humid summers and mild winters. Bring light and comfortable clothing, but also a light jacket for cooler evenings.
7. Culture and Etiquette: Respect local traditions and culture. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly. Photographing people without permission can be considered disrespectful.
8. Food: Try the local cuisine, such as fresh seafood and traditional dishes like “matapa” (a dish made with cassava leaves, peanuts, and coconut). Avoid eating from unverified street vendors to prevent health issues.
9. Language and Communication: Learning some basic phrases in Portuguese can be helpful and appreciated by locals. Here are some useful phrases:
• Hello / Good morning / Good afternoon / Good night (Olá / Bom dia / Boa tarde / Boa noite)
• Please (Por favor)
• Thank you (Obrigado/a)
• How much does it cost? (Quanto custa?)
• Where is…? (Onde fica…?)
10. Exploration: Take the opportunity to explore beyond the main tourist spots. Visiting local neighborhoods, markets, and small restaurants can provide a more authentic and enriching experience.
