Mombasa Old Town Day Tour
Overview of the tour in Mombasa
10:30 AM Meeting at the Elephant Tusks on Moi Avenue.
We’ll begin with a brief history of the Tusks and the nearby Garden. Afterward, we’ll visit the Hindu temple. The tour will then take you to Mama Ngina Seafront and Fort Jesus. The fort, built by the Portuguese, played a crucial role in controlling Indian Ocean trade and breaking the influence of the Middle East and Asia.
Next, we’ll walk past the Mombasa Club, built in 1897, and I’ll share its fascinating history. From there, we’ll continue along the Ndia Kuu main highway, the first main road built in Kenya, and visit Government Square, the British Governor’s House, the Old Post Office, the Old Prison, and the Portuguese Cemetery.
We’ll then visit the Portuguese Chapel, followed by the oldest mosque in Mombasa. As we stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town, I’ll provide detailed insights into the history of the Swahili people, their culture, and their food. You’ll also learn about the first American and Italian consulates in the Old Town.
Our walk wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Spice Market, where you’ll find a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices.
This activity includes:
- Fort Jesus Museum
- Seafront Swahili Dishes
- Government Square
- Old Post Office
- Water, coffee, tea
