The Making of Modern Mostar: A Century of Conflict & Transformation
Overview of the tour in Mostar
Curious about Mostar's more recent history? Want to hear more about how the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and our modern state of Bosnia and Herzegovina evolved? Or perhaps you are wondering how the wars of the last century (WWI, WWII, and recent wars of the 1990s) impacted and shaped the development of our beautiful city and region, the scars of which can still be seen on our landscape?
Join us for Sheva's Making of Modern Mostar Free Walking Tour, focusing upon the last 150 years of history - a time period that was equally transformative and tumultuous. The tour will pick up from where the cobblestone of Old Town ends...and continue our explorations together through the areas developed over the last century.
Learn about our recent history, leading up to the socio-political context of today, from the perspective of a locally certified guide who has both an incredible foundation of knowledge, but also the first hand experience of one who has lived much of this history. Understand the complicated events which placed BiH on the headlines of global media in the 90s and gain an insiders perspective to help humanize and make sense of our history.

Our Guides
On arrival
Meeting Point: Public Square in front of the Turkish Hamam Museum in Old Town Mostar.
The Hamam Museum is centrally located and easy to find at the entrance of Old Town, just a couple of minute's walk from the Old Bridge. Your guide will be easy to spot! Look for one of our certified tour guides wearing a t-shirt with the Sheva Walking Tours logo.
Please arrive on time for the tour! Free Tours are group tours. Be considerate of other guests and your guides, all of whom are likely on a schedule. If our Free Tour schedule is not convenient to your personal itinerary, we recommend booking a private tour with us. Thank you!
Things to note
Contact us for a full schedule of our tours.
Please Note: This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 12. If you are travelling as a family, we recommend our lighter Free Tour, The Heart of Mostar. Alternatively, booking a private tour can allow your guide to accommodate your family's individual needs, whether it's an interest in a specific topic or a bathroom break for a child. Thank you for your understanding!
Booking: For groups of 5 or more people, contact us directly! Please do not make multiple bookings for your larger groups. Doing so violates freetour.com policy as well as the regulations of Sheva Walking Tours. Remember, Free Tours were developed specifically for solo and independent travellers. For larger groups, a private tour is a more appropriate choice as well as cost-effective.
Accessibility: Mostar's Old Town was not designed with accessibility in mind! If you use a large pram, have mobility concerns, or require other accommodations, please contact us prior to your tour. In some cases, we might recommend a private tour so that we can better accommodate your needs and ensure a wonderful experience. Free Walking Tours are group tours that do not easily enable on-the-spot customization for participants.
Private Tours in Italian and Local Language Tours are also available by request - please contact us directly to set up a time convenient for you. Please
Note:
- In order to provide you with better service, please include your valid phone number (including country code) and email on the booking reservation. This will make it easier for us to contact you to verify and confirm your booking!
- Children do not need to be included in the reservation numbers!
- We understand that travel sometimes requires flexibility and a change of plans. If you need to cancel your reservations, please do so through freetour.com. We appreciate it.
Free Cancellation
You are free to cancel a booking anytime. We kindly remind you to cancel bookings you cannot arrive for. Being reported as absent decreases your customer level points and the benefits you can enjoy.
