Overview

During our tour, we will talk about both the light and dark pages of German history. We will learn about the history of Bavaria from the Roman beginnings of the city, through 700 years during which it was ruled by one powerful family, the Wittelsbachs, to the unification of Germany by Bismarck in the 19th century.

We will see the places where Nazism was born, but also those where Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, worked while still an archbishop. We will also see, perhaps the most disappointing attraction of the city – a show of knightly figure fights in the city’s carillon.

Take a walk with us and get to know a city that combines like no other seemingly contradictory fields: history and motoring, art and technology, entrepreneurship, and a specific lifestyle of Munich people, which is a mixture of self-confidence, freedom, and cheerfulness. Perhaps all these contradictions are seamlessly united by what is most important to Munich people… beer!

“great tour with awesome tour guide”
We had a tour with Jean and got a great insight into the city because of his well balanced selection historical and cultural facts about munich. He shared his broad knowledge about Munich in a very entertaining and interactive way and gave useful advise for local restaurants and bars and had many ideas what else to do and see.

“Disappointing ”
The guide started the tour at 2.20 even though there was one person still to arrive for a 2.30 start. He made it clear he wanted a tip in the region of €25 per person and the tour was definitely not free! He mentioned tips numerous times throughout the tour to ensure we didn’t forget to tip him. We went into the foyer of the town hall and back out into the main square totally missing the courtyard, which would have been very nice for everyone to see. He spent more time promoting his 5.30 beer tour than talking about the current tour. The tour could have been completed in an hour, we spent too long standing around listening to irrelevant chatter rather than the culture. So many interesting places were completely missed. For example The Residenz and the gardens, The Town Hall. We had a 15 minute break right at the end of the tour. From recommencement the tour lasted just 3 minutes more and long enough for him to get his tips. Halfway around 2 people left the tour and he said I can’t believe they left without leaving a tip! Very disappointing. I would not recommend

“Hidden in Plain Sight”
Noel was our guide for the tour of Old Town Munich. We were a small group, so it felt very personalized. My favorite stories were the things that were hidden in plain sight and of course the walk through the Hoffbrau Haus. Noel also gave us some recommendations for dinner (went to Augustine Keller TWICE) and other sights to see. Huge thanks.
