Overview

The Teatro Massimo, the open-air market "Il Capo", Piazza della Memoria, Piazza Beati Paoli, the Cathedral, the City Hall, Piazza Magione: every stop is a cause for reflection, a chance to mull over the realities of the Mafia and consider the civic movement against Mafioso power.

Along the Cassaro, you will come across an orange sticker on their windows. Their owners have said NO to paying the extortion racket, or 'pizzo', and have joined the mafia-free critical consumption campaign promoted by the grassroots movement Addiopizzo.

The tour ends in Piazza Pretoria, in front of the City Hall. Here you will have the opportunity to discover some curiosities about how over the course of years the Mafia has related to politics.

Really good tour. Very interesting information. Makes me want to learn more. I now understand that Mafia is not glamour or Hollywood. Thank you Eduardo... you have taught us a lot today, and gave us a lot to think about.

“A personal point of view on organized crime in Sicily”
I really enjoyed Attilio's personal account of the way that he, as a young Palermitano, had experienced the terrible years leading up to the murders of Falcone and Borsellino. For professional reasons I am relatively well informed about the historical and criminological facts of the matter, but hearing a first person account injected a large dose of humanity into the story. Attilio is a great speaker, performer and entertainer, who is not afraid to explain and show the emotional complexity of the experience that living on the same island with La Mafia has had.

3 hours went by very quickly, not much walking so it's very accessible to any age. Linda was a great guide, caring about the group and open to questions. Recommended 100%!

“Excellent Tour With a Guide Full of Local Information”
This 3-hour long tour is filled to the Brim with the history of Sicily in its relation to Cosa Nostra and more importantly, the people who worked to change this island for the better. We were taught the many brave individuals who worked tirelessly to put an end to the mafia's stranglehold on the citizens and their businesses, who tragically lost their lives to these mafiosos. For anyone who is interested in learning about real life mafia and wants to have a personal understanding of how lives are affected by it, this is a phenomenal tour.

“A great, different kind of of tour”
When I found this tour I was instantly intrigued, especially after befriending another Italian who aligned with this sentiment. While we did finish slightly earlier than the stated 3 hours, our very local guide Ermes was great. He is clearly invested in the Addiopizzo campaign and relayed material at relevant spots with both seriousness and humour, while adding personal insights and anecdotes. As described, we did not use any time to talk about "Arts and architecture" unless it related directly to the anti-mafia discussions or timeline. If you're looking for something a little different I highly recommend this tour. found it worth the price paid with some of the fee going to the campaign to fight the Mafia influence.
