Jewish History Tour in Riga
Overview of the tour in Riga
You will get information about the Jewish history in Latvia from the 17th century till now. The tour includes visits to the Old Choral Synagogue, the former ghetto territory, and the old Jewish cemetery. It was a part of the Jewish ghetto during the Nazi occupation.
When the war ended and the Soviets took over, it was turned into a park. Today, the only evidence of its original purpose is a large stone with the Star of David.
You will have the opportunity to visit Peitav Shul, the only working synagogue in Latvia. Built in 1905, it is the only surviving Jewish prayer house and the main meeting place for the 7,000-strong community. Its sacred scrolls and other treasures were hidden and escaped destruction. It was not burnt down during the Holocaust due to its proximity to other houses in Old Riga.
