Santa Cruz de Tenerife began its history on May 3, 1494. Since then, its port became a key point for routes to the New World, and in the 18th century, it consolidated its position as the most important port in the Canary Islands.
The struggle for the capital was intense, facing internal rivals such as La Laguna and Las Palmas, and external threats such as pirates, corsairs and the British. However, Santa Cruz forged itself with the effort of workers, the sacrifice of artisans and sailors, and the astuteness of merchants and traders.
