Plovdiv is like an open-air museum with its many interesting monuments and historical buildings. Plovdiv features ancient remains from the Roman Empire such as the Roman Forum, Roman Stadium, and the Amphitheater. A part of the city features architecture from the National Revival period in the 18-19th century. The spectacular Bachkovo Monastery from the 11th century holds a special, meaningful place in the city one of the oldest and biggest Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Europe. Plovdiv also hosts the icon of Saint Mary.
