Convent Route: The Origin of Marzipan
Overview of the tour in Toledo
We begin our tour at the Convent of the Comendadoras de Santiago, a place with more than five centuries of history. This convent, linked to the order of Santiago, is famous for the dedication with which its nuns make traditional sweets, including marzipan. The Comendadoras preserve the ancestral recipes, and although they do not have the same fame as other convents in Toledo, the quality of their confectionery is unsurpassed.
Now we head to the Convent of Santo Domingo el Real, a place of great spirituality founded in the 14th century. Here, the Dominican nuns continue to make handmade marzipan using the original recipe. It is a place where time seems to have stood still, and traditions are kept alive, especially in pastries. Did you know that each marzipan here is molded by hand? Each one has a special dedication, like a small edible work of art.
To conclude our visit in the best way, we invite you to a tasting of marzipan accompanied by wine from the region. The pairing between marzipan, with its soft and delicate sweetness, and the wines of the land, especially the white and sweet ones, is a unique experience.
