Overview
We will meet in front of the statue of Alexander Tamanian at the intersection of Tamanyan and Moscovyan streets in the heart of the city. Tamanian was a neoclassical architect who designed the first general plan of Yerevan, approved in 1924. His role was crucial in transforming a small provincial city into a modern cultural center, so it will be interesting to learn some facts about his life, work, and main achievements.
The statue of Tasmanian marks the entrance to The Cascade, a building complex that includes terraced gardens connected by extensive staircases, the Cafesjian Museum of Art, and a sculpture garden, which we will explore next. The sculpture garden at the base of the complex features works by internationally acclaimed artists Fernando Botero, Jaume Plensa, and Barry Flanagan. Inside the museum, most of the displayed pieces come from the private collection of the founder, J. Cafesjian, and include works of drawing, sculpture, and glass.
The best part, admission is free! After soaking in the art, you can take the escalator to the top or walk up the staircases outside the building. In either case, you will be rewarded with a grand view of the buzzing city center.
