Cihuatlán was located in a valley formed by the rivers of Pantla and Ixtapa (Barrio Viejo or San José Ixtapa), where the name "Xihuacan" was identified in the sources of the 16th century. Nahuatl word that means "those who own the turquoise" or "those who own the years";

Xihuacán was the main religious center Cuitlateca and an important commercial city for both Olmecas and Teotihuacanos, the latter interested in crafts with marine products.
